CONTEXT
- Karnataka’s Health Department has revamped the Shravana Sanjeevini programme.
- The programme focuses on early detection and treatment of hearing impairments in children.
- Government order for the revised scheme was issued on June 12.
CONCEPT
- Aims at early identification of hearing loss and providing cochlear implants.
- Covers surgical intervention, post-operative care, and rehabilitation.
- Focuses on both medical treatment and device maintenance.
- Previously offered services without a structured post-implant care system.
CURRENT
- Programme Cost: ₹12 crore.
- Target Group: Children, with age-based implantation rules.
Eligibility & Treatment
- Cochlear implants not recommended for children under 2 years, except in expert-approved cases.
- Children detected with hearing loss before 18 months can receive bilateral implants if family funds the implants.
- Government covers surgery costs via Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust (SAST).
Device Support & Maintenance
- Free repair, maintenance, and replacement of implants during 4–6-year warranty period.
- Includes battery, springs, and spare parts via empanelled hospitals.
- 50% subsidy on replacement of ineffective processors during warranty period.
Therapy & Rehabilitation
- Auditory-Verbal Therapy (AVT) provided up to age 3 or longer if needed.
- Therapy essential for speech and language development post-implantation.
