CONTEXT
- HAL, a major defence PSU, has won a historic contract to acquire and operationalize Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) technology from ISRO.
- This marks India’s first full launch vehicle technology transfer from a national space agency to a company.
CONCEPT – HAL & SASLV OVERVIEW
- Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL):
- Founded in 1940, headquartered in Bengaluru.
- A Maharatna PSU (2024) under the Ministry of Defence.
- Specializes in aircraft, helicopters, jet engines, avionics, and overhaul of defence equipment.
- Operates 11 R&D centres and 21 manufacturing divisions across India.
- Known for producing India’s first indigenous fighter jet – HF-24 Marut.
- Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV):
- Developed by ISRO for launching small payloads (up to 500 kg) to Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
- Offers low-cost, quick turnaround launches.
- Targets the growing global demand for small satellite launches, especially for commercial use.
CURRENT
- HAL selected as technology transfer recipient by IN-SPACe (Dept. of Space’s commercial arm).
- Contract Value: ₹511 crore over 2 years.
- HAL beat two other shortlisted consortiums led by:
- Alpha Design Technologies (with Agnikul Cosmos, Walchand Industries).
- Bharat Dynamics Ltd (with Skyroot Aerospace, Keltron, BHEL).
- IN-SPACe, ISRO, NSIL, and HAL to sign the Technology Transfer Agreement.
- HAL to:
- Develop and launch 2 SSLV prototypes with ISRO’s support.
- Eventually independently build, own, and operate SSLV missions.
Strategic Significance
- First-ever full launch vehicle tech transfer from ISRO to any firm.
- Strengthens India’s space commercialisation and self-reliance in launch capabilities.
- Aligns with goal to grow India’s space economy to $44 billion by 2033.
- Promotes public-private partnership (PPP) in the space sector.
