NEWS – World Bank’s Spring 2025 Poverty and Equity Brief ranks India 4th globally on Gini Index (Score: 25.5).

HIGHLIGHTS

  • India is now more equal than every G7 and G20 country, including the US (41.8), UK (34.4), and China (35.7).

Top Equal Countries (Gini Index):

  1. Slovak Republic – 24.1
  2. Slovenia – 24.3
  3. Belarus – 24.4
  4. India – 25.5

What is Gini Index:

  • Measures income inequality (0 = perfect equality, 100 = extreme inequality).
  • Developed by Corrado Gini in 1912.

Other Key Insights:

  • 171 million Indians lifted out of extreme poverty (World Bank, 2025).
  • Revised poverty line: $3/day (down from $2.15); India’s extreme poverty rate now 5.3% (2022–23).
