SUDDEN DEATHS DECLARED NOTIFIABLE DISEASE – KARNATAKA GOVT
NEWS – Karnataka has declared sudden deaths (mainly due to heart attacks) below 45 years as a notifiable condition
HIGHLIGHTS
- All deaths outside hospitals due to sudden collapse must be reported to the government.
- Autopsy made mandatory in all such cases to determine actual cause of death.
- Decision based on recommendations of a government-appointed expert committee.
Key Recommendations & Actions
- Need for a cardiac surveillance programme and a national registry on sudden cardiac deaths in young adults.
- Annual screening for heart diseases to be conducted among:
- School students (15+ years)
- Government employees
- Private sector employees (encouraged)
Post-COVID Concerns
- Heart attacks in Karnataka have increased by 4–5% post-COVID.
- No link found between COVID vaccines and sudden heart attacks.
- COVID-induced lifestyle changes (e.g., less physical activity, more screen time, stress) identified as major risk factors.
- Rise in consumption of processed, high-sugar foods also contributing.
