HIMACHAL PRADESH – AADHAAR FACE RECOGNITION FOR RATION DISTRIBUTION
NEWS – Himachal Pradesh has become the first Indian state to implement Aadhaar-based face authentication (FaceAuth) for distributing ration under the Public Distribution System (PDS)
HIGHLIGHTS
- The initiative was launched by the Department of Digital Technologies and Governance (DDTG).
- FaceAuth replaces traditional authentication methods such as OTPs and fingerprints, which often faced issues like SMS failures and biometric mismatches.
- The new system uses a smartphone app installed on fair price shop (FPS) owners’ mobile phones to verify beneficiaries via facial recognition using the device’s camera.
- According to Gokul Butail, Principal Advisor to the Chief Minister, the process is now more accessible, streamlined, and reliable.
- The app-based facial authentication mechanism is expected to increase success rates and reduce verification time, improving efficiency in ration distribution.
- This is considered a technological milestone in public service delivery, showcasing Himachal Pradesh’s commitment to digital inclusion and governance reforms.
- The state aims to use this technology to ensure seamless and dignified access to essential services for all eligible citizens, especially in remote areas.
- The move aligns with broader goals of Digital India and highlights the innovative use of Aadhaar infrastructure for welfare services.
