NEWS – Thousands of devotees recently participated in the grand consecration ceremony (Kumbabishekam) of the Tiruchendur Subramanya Swamy Temple, held after a gap of 16 years

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The ritual was performed in accordance with Agama Shastra, drawing devotees from across Tamil Nadu and other states.
  • The temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan, son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
  • Located in Tiruchendur, Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu, the temple holds immense religious and historical significance.
  • It is one of the six Arupadai Veedu (sacred abodes) of Lord Murugan and the only one situated on the seashore.
  • Facing the Bay of Bengal, the temple is washed by the waves of the Gulf of Mannar.
  • With a history spanning over 2,000 years, the temple showcases Dravidian-style Tamil architecture, built mainly using red sandstone.
  • The temple’s unique RajaGopuram, a nine-tiered tower standing 138 feet tall, is constructed on the western side, due to the sea being on the eastern side.
  • The sanctum sanctorum houses Lord Murugan in a standing posture.
  • Notable architectural features include mandapams, carved pillars, long temple streets, and nine Kalasams atop the Gopuram.
