NEWS – BBMP Begins Work to Upgrade 75 Junctions Under ‘Suraksha Mission – 75’

- Initiative Name: Suraksha Mission – 75
- Launched By: Announced in the 2023–24 Karnataka State Budget by then CM Basavaraj Bommai.
- Implementing Agency: Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
- Objective: To upgrade and make 75 key traffic junctions in Bengaluru safer and more aesthetic.

- Packages: Divided into 15 work packages

- Contractors: Work orders have been issued; execution underway (e.g., BHEL junction, Deepanjali Nagar)
Key Features of the Junction Upgrade
- Safety Enhancements:
- Geometry corrections to improve traffic flow and prevent accidents
- Dedicated pedestrian infrastructure: bollards, zebra crossings, lane markers
- Shoulder drain clearance to prevent flooding
- Pedestrian Comfort:
- Ramps and seating arrangements
- Improved walkability and accessibility
- Beautification Measures:
- Fountains, ornamental plants, and decorative lighting
- Air quality improvement and pollution mitigation through water features
- Partner: World Resources Institute (WRI) India
- Criteria for Selection: Based on accident and pedestrian fatality data
Additional Initiatives
- Underpasses: Geometry and beautification work at Mehkri and C.N.R. Rao Circles
- Future Plans: 20 more junctions to be upgraded under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP)
