TUVALU
NEWS – Over 5,000 people from Tuvalu have applied for a new migration visa, marking the first initiative globally aimed at relocating residents due to climate change. This visa offers a lifeline against rising sea levels threatening the island nation.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Geographical Context: Tuvalu, formerly Ellice Islands, is a small island country in the Pacific Ocean, located between Hawaii and Australia. It comprises nine low-lying islands spread over 676 km. The highest elevation is just 4.5 meters above sea level, making it extremely vulnerable to sea level rise. The nation lacks rivers and experiences a hot, rainy climate.
- Demographics and Language: Tuvalu has one of the world’s smallest populations (after Vatican City). The majority speak Tuvaluan, while English is also widely used.
- Economic Overview: The economy is primarily subsistence-based. Key income sources include remittances, copra exports, postage stamp sales, and fishing license fees from foreign fleets.
- Political Structure: Gained independence from the UK in 1978. It is a parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy within the Commonwealth Realm. King Charles III is the head of state, represented locally by a Governor-General. There are no political parties; the prime minister is elected by the legislature.
