‘GLOBAL SPECS 2030’  

NEWS – The World Health Organization (WHO), in collaboration with NGO Drishti, launched the ‘Global Specs 2030’ initiative to ensure universal access to affordable eye care by the year 2030. The announcement came during a conference on adolescent eye health at Amity University, Noida.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Over 800 million people worldwide suffer from vision problems without access to eye care.
  • Dr Yutaro Setoya, WHO India Team Lead for Non-communicable Diseases, emphasized the socioeconomic impact of vision impairment, particularly among children aged 5–15.
  • The alarming rise in myopia among adolescents has raised urgent concerns.

About ‘Global Specs 2030’

The initiative is centered around five key pillars:

  • Services: Expanding access to refractive eye services.
  • Personnel: Strengthening the eye care workforce.
  • Education: Raising awareness on eye health.
  • Cost: Making eyeglasses and services affordable.
  • Surveillance: Enhancing data systems and research in eye health.

Strategic Approaches

  • Normative Work: Builds on WHO’s guidance for integrated eye care.
  • Global SPECS Network: Platform for collective advocacy and professional exchange.
  • Private Sector Dialogues: Includes stakeholders from optical, pharma, and insurance sectors.
  • Regional Engagement: Assists nations in implementing localized eye care solutions.
