NEWS – Kalyani Chalukya-Era Stepwell – Nagakunda Pushkarani – in Gadag Set for Revival

HIGHLIGHTS

Historical Significance

• The Nagakunda Pushkarani, a 10th–11th century CE stepwell from the Kalyani Chalukya era, is located in Sudi village, Gadag district, Karnataka.
• Once a thriving pilgrimage and strategic hub under Akkadevi, sister of Chalukya monarch Jayasimha II.
• Architecturally comparable to Gujarat’s Rani ki Vav and Adalaj stepwells, with intricate sculptures and temple-like façade detailing.

Restoration Initiative

• Revival under the ‘Adopt a Monument’ scheme by the Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage (DAMH).
• Restoration led by Deccan Heritage Foundation India (DHFI), in collaboration with Heritage Matters, Gandipet Welfare Society (Hyderabad-based NGO), and Water Literacy Foundation.
• Funding by Rajashree Pinnamenni, Gandipet Welfare Society.

Key Restoration Works

• Documentation & Mapping: Recording current structure and condition.
• Cleaning & Structural Repair: Removal of vegetation, roots, dredging, and well cleaning.
• Mantapa Restoration: Giant Ganesh idol and adjacent structure being restored.
• Water Systems: Pits and percolation tanks restored over three months by Water Literacy Foundation.

Tourism & Community Impact

• Project completion expected by Oct/Nov 2025.
• Second phase: Pathway to Jodu Kalasadagudi temple, landscaping, and preservation for tourism boost.
• Conservation architect B. Sarath Chandra highlights its uniqueness in southern India, merging architectural beauty with water storage utility.
