KARNATAKA ISSUES
- In a first for the country, the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes will use domestic electricity connections to compile a list of households for its upcoming socio-educational survey. This approach bypasses the voter list, which has faced scrutiny, and the outdated 2011 census data. The use of electricity meter readers to geo-tag households is a novel method that could become a model for future surveys.
- The South Western Railway’s Hubballi Division has implemented a new drone-based system to enhance the efficiency and safety of goods loading operations at Ranjithpura station. This pioneering initiative uses drones with RGB technology to monitor and correct uneven loading of iron ore, providing real-time data to a cloud-based application. Officials state this pilot project is cost-effective, reduces human error, and aims to minimize risks like derailments caused by improper loading.
ECONOMY
- The Central Government has notified the Income-Tax Act, 2025, replacing the 1961 Act after more than six decades. Effective from April 1, 2026, it seeks to simplify, modernise, and rationalise income-tax law. Key changes include a new “Tax Year” cycle, extended return updates up to 4 years, reduced assessment reopening to 5 years, and clearer provisions on MAT and AMT. Digital provisions expand oversight into virtual spaces, raising privacy concerns despite government justification of necessity.
- The Reserve Bank of India has named Indranil Bhattacharyya as a new ex-officio member of its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). An Executive Director at the RBI, he will take the place of Rajiv Ranjan, who is retiring. Bhattacharyya will be part of the upcoming MPC meeting scheduled for late September. The six-member MPC, which is led by the RBI Governor, is responsible for determining interest rates to control inflation and promote economic growth.
ENVIRONMENT
- On August 18, 2025, Haryana notified its definition of “forest” in compliance with the Supreme Court’s March 4 directive. As per criteria, land qualifies if it spans at least 5 hectares (isolated) or 2 hectares (contiguous) with canopy density ≥40%. Environmentalists object, arguing this excludes ecologically vital open forests (10–40% cover), threatens Aravalli protection, and follows Goa’s restrictive model. The move raises concerns about real estate, mining, and divergence from broader ecological safeguards under FCA, 1980 and Godavarman ruling.
- Nepal has officially joined the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), an India-led initiative launched by PM Modi in April 2023 at Mysuru to conserve seven big cat species. With over 90 member nations, IBCA promotes cooperation, knowledge-sharing, and resource mobilization for conservation. Nepal, home to tigers, leopards, and snow leopards, has shown remarkable success, nearly tripling its tiger population from 121 in 2009 to 355 in 2022, strengthening regional ecological security and global collaboration.
SCIENCE AND TECH
- The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) achieved a major breakthrough by successfully testing the maiden flight of the Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS) at Chandipur, Odisha. The system integrates QRSAM, VSHORADS, and laser-based Directed Energy Weapons with radars, drones, and command systems. During tests, it neutralised UAVs and drones at varying ranges and altitudes. This marks a leap in India’s indigenous defence capabilities, enhancing air defence against modern aerial threats and supporting Atmanirbhar Bharat.
- The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully conducted its first Integrated Air Drop Test (IADT-1) in Bengaluru, a key step for the Gaganyaan mission, India’s maiden human spaceflight programme. A 5-tonne dummy crew module was dropped from a Chinook helicopter, validating the parachute-based deceleration system for safe splashdown. The test, involving IAF, DRDO, Navy, and Coast Guard, marks a major milestone in astronaut safety, complementing ongoing preparations like crew escape systems, life support modules, and training facilities.
- The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has unveiled a roadmap to launch over 100 satellites in the next 15 years, boosting earth observation, communication, and navigation. With ~80 satellites for land use and others for ocean and atmospheric monitoring, ISRO also plans Chandrayaan-4 to 8, a Mars lander, and a crewed Moon mission by 2040. Its heaviest rocket, the Lunar Module Launch Vehicle (LMLV), will be ready by 2035. Supported by 350+ private startups, this aligns with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
MISCELLANEOUS
- India has secured the 7th rank in the Global AI Innovation Race, according to a study by Linkee. With a score of 24, India has developed 29 AI models, attracted $7.25 billion in AI investments, and leads globally in workforce adoption with 92% of employees using AI daily. Job openings stand at 8 per million people, higher than South Korea but much lower than Singapore. The U.S. tops the list, followed by Switzerland, South Korea, and China.
