NEWS – Indian Coast Guard Commissions Fast Patrol Vessel ‘Akshar’ at Karaikal

HIGHLIGHTS

Strengthening Coastal Security

  • The Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Akshar, a state-of-the-art Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV), was commissioned at Karaikal, Puducherry.
  • The vessel marks the second in a series of eight Adamya-class FPVs, representing India’s growing capability in indigenous shipbuilding and maritime security.

Symbol of Resolve and Self-Reliance

  • The name ‘Akshar’, meaning imperishable, embodies the Coast Guard’s commitment to ensuring safe, secure, and clean seas.
  • Designed and constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), the vessel boasts over 60% indigenous content, reinforcing the spirit of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence manufacturing.

Key Features and Capabilities

  • Displacement: Approximately 320 tonnes.
  • Propulsion: Two 3,000 KW diesel engines driving indigenously developed Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPPs) and gearboxes.
  • Speed: Capable of achieving a maximum speed of 27 knots.
  • Endurance: 1,500 nautical miles at an economical cruising speed.
  • Systems: Equipped with an Integrated Bridge System (IBS), Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS), and Automated Power Management System (APMS) for enhanced automation and operational efficiency.

Operational Role and Deployment

  • ICGS Akshar will operate under the Commander, Coast Guard Region (East), and will be based at Karaikal.
  • The vessel is designed for coastal surveillance, search and rescue operations, anti-smuggling, and environmental protection
  • Its advanced technology and indigenous design strengthen India’s maritime response capability along the eastern seaboard.
