BOOST FOR BIODIESEL IN KARNATAKA: TALUK-LEVEL FUEL PUMPS PLANNED
NEWS
- The Karnataka State Bioenergy Development Board (KSBDB) has announced plans to establish biodiesel pumps at the taluk level across the state.
- The move aims to promote eco-friendly, cost-effective, and sustainable fuels to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
HIGHLIGHTS
Partnership and Implementation
- Pumps will be run by private players, while the Board will:
- Assist in securing government permissions.
- Support in marketing biodiesel to enhance public awareness.
- The plan follows the newly notified ‘Karnataka State Biodiesel (B-100) Blending with High-Speed Diesel for Transportation Purposes (Licensing) Order, 2025’, which legalizes private setup and marketing of biodiesel pumps.
Economic and Environmental Benefits
- Biodiesel is derived from used cooking oil, oilseeds, and agricultural products.
- Expected to be ₹5 cheaper per litre than conventional diesel.
- With wider adoption, the price may further decrease, reducing fuel expenses.
- Cleaner burning fuel — causes less pollution and cuts greenhouse gas emissions.
- Reduces India’s dependency on imported crude oil.
Quality and Public Concerns
- Public concerns included potential engine damage and low mileage.
- Officials clarified only B100 biodiesel (100% pure biodiesel) will be sold,
which is internationally tested and approved for automobile use.
Addressing the Market Monopoly
- Currently, biodiesel stocks are largely bought by oil companies for blending with regular diesel.
- Producers argue that consumers don’t receive cost benefits due to this practice.
- Direct sale through taluk-level pumps aims to break this monopoly and ensure consumer savings.
Policy Significance
- Karnataka was an early adopter of bioenergy policy (2007–08).
- The initiative aligns with the National Bioenergy Policy (2017), promoting green, decentralized energy systems across India.
