CHINA’S GOLDEN MONKEYS DEBUT AT EUROPEAN ZOOS
CHINA’S GOLDEN MONKEYS DEBUT AT EUROPEAN ZOOS
NEWS – China’s golden snub-nosed monkeys, known for their bright orange manes and blue faces, have made their debut at European zoos. The move is seen as an extension of China’s famed “panda diplomacy.”
HIGHLIGHTS
Background – What is Panda Diplomacy?
- Panda diplomacy refers to China’s long-standing practice of gifting or loaning giant pandas to foreign nations as symbols of goodwill.
- Originated in 1957, when pandas were sent to the Soviet Union.
- In 1972, pandas were gifted to the U.S. after Nixon’s visit to Beijing.
- Since 1984, China shifted from gifting to long-term leasing, with part of the fee supporting panda conservation in China.
Extension of the Concept – Wildlife as Soft Power
- China now extends the concept to other endangered native species, notably the golden snub-nosed monkey.
- In April 2025, three such monkeys arrived at France’s Beauval Zoo, marking 60 years of diplomatic relations between China and France.
- This move aims to enhance scientific collaboration and cultural ties.
Golden Snub-Nosed Monkeys:
- Found in the mountain forests of central China.
- Endangered due to habitat loss and climate threats.
- Represented in Chinese art and literature, notably the Monkey King in Journey to the West.
Ethical and Conservation Concerns:
- Transporting endangered animals abroad raises welfare concerns.
- Critics argue such exchanges risk commercialization of conservation.
- However, long-term leases ensure part of the funding aids habitat conservation and scientific research in China.
