INDIA’S PUSH TOWARDS GREEN AMMONIA – L&T TO BUILD NATION’S LARGEST PLANT
NEWS
- Larsen & Toubro’s green arm, L&T Energy Greentech, has secured a tender to build India’s largest green hydrogen plant at IOCL’s Panipat refinery.
- This aligns with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, aiming for decarbonisation of industry and energy security.
HIGHLIGHTS
About Green Ammonia
- Definition: Ammonia (NH₃), a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen, is vital in fertilisers and chemicals.
- Conventional Ammonia (Grey): Produced from natural gas; emits ~2 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of ammonia.
- Green Ammonia: Produced using green hydrogen (from electrolysis powered by renewables) and nitrogen, via the Haber-Bosch process; 100% renewable and carbon-free.
Production Process
- Electrolysis: Renewable-powered splitting of water into hydrogen & oxygen.
- Nitrogen Capture: Atmospheric nitrogen extracted.
- Haber-Bosch Synthesis: Hydrogen + Nitrogen → Ammonia (at high pressure, temperature, and catalyst).
Applications
- Fertilisers: Critical nitrogen source for agriculture.
- Industrial Use: Raw material for nitric acid, explosives, dyes, fibres, pharmaceuticals.
- Clean Fuel: Alternative to diesel & marine fuels in locomotives and shipping.
- Power Generation: Can be used as fuel for electricity plants.
