KARNATAKA BODY OPPOSES KERALA’S MALAYALAM LANGUAGE BILL
News: Karnataka Border Area Development Authority (KBADA) raised objections to Kerala’s proposed Malayalam Language Bill, 2025.
Key Provision of the Bill:
Mandates Malayalam as the first language from Classes 1 to 10 in all government schools in Kerala
Concern Raised:
The Bill may adversely affect Kannada-speaking linguistic minorities, especially in border regions like Kasaragod
KBADA’s Action:
- A KBADA delegation met Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and submitted a memorandum seeking stalling and reconsideration of the Bill.
- KBADA cited constitutional safeguards for linguistic minorities (Articles 29 and 30)
