  • Kaziranga Tiger Reserve now ranks 3rd globally in tiger density.
  • It recorded 18.65 tigers per 100 sq km, trailing behind Bandipur (19.83) and Corbett (19.56).

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Population Growth
    • The tiger population rose to 148 in 2024, from 104 in 2022.
    • Increase credited partly to first-time sampling in Biswanath Wildlife Division, which identified 27 tigers.
  • Survey Methodology
    • Conducted over 103 days across three divisions during 2023–24.
    • Camera traps set at 293 locations yielded over 1.3 million photographs, including 4,011 tiger images.
    • Right-flank stripe patterns used to identify 83 females, 55 males, and 10 unclassified adult tigers.
  • Key Drivers Behind Rise
    • Habitat expansion: Additional 200 sq km added, including 12.82 sq km encroachment-free land in Burhachapori-Laokhowa sanctuaries.
    • Enhanced protection through better patrolling and monitoring.
  • Technological Advancements
    • Tools like M-STrIPES, drones, and infrared surveillance improved anti-poaching, habitat monitoring, and movement tracking.
    • Integration of technology led to better data and improved tiger safety.
  • Human Resources & Community Support
    • Support from 113 trained ‘Van Durgas’ (female forest guards) and civil society organisations crucial in bridging historical data gaps.
    • Director Sonali Ghosh credited teamwork, technological integration, and strategic conservation planning for success.
