NEWS – Union Cabinet Approves MERITE Scheme to Transform Technical Education

Duration: 2025–26 to 2029–30

About the MERITE Scheme

  • Full Form: Multidisciplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education.
  • Type: Central Sector Scheme.
  • Objective: Enhance quality, equity, and governance in technical education, in line with NEP 2020 vision.

Target Institutions

  • 275 government and government-aided technical institutions, including:
    • National Institutes of Technology (NITs)
    • State Engineering Colleges
    • Polytechnics
    • Affiliating Technical Universities (ATUs)
  • State/UT technical education departments will also receive support.

Beneficiaries & Impact

  • Around 7.5 lakh students to benefit from improved infrastructure, learning resources, and opportunities.
  • Expected outcomes:
    • Digital strategies adopted across states/UTs.
    • Introduction of multidisciplinary courses.
    • Better employability through skill-oriented education.

    • Enhanced governance and quality assurance.

  • Central nodal agency for coordination and fund disbursal.
  • Collaboration with IITs, IIMs, AICTE, NBA for guidance and monitoring.

    • Research hubs, incubation centers, innovation labs.
    • Skill labs, maker spaces, and language workshops.
