NEWS – The Union Culture and Tourism Minister recently unveiled the restored Sheesh Mahal, a Mughal-era palace located in Shalimar Bagh, North Delhi. The restoration was undertaken by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which has preserved the monument since it was declared of national importance in 1983.

ABOUT SHEESH MAHAL:

• Built in 1653 by Izz-un-Nisha Begum, wife of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan.
• Designed as a royal retreat, it replicates the famed Shalimar Bagh in Kashmir.
• An example of Mughal garden architecture, away from the bustle of Shahjahanabad.
• Structure: Constructed with bricks and red sandstone; entry gates on east and west sides.
• Features: An arched gateway flanked by a three-arched dalan on both sides.
• Inside: Central hall with side compartments; Baradari with a water channel.
• Two mirror-adorned chambers display Kangra and Rajasthani miniature paintings depicting works of poets like Keshav, Surdas, and Bihari.
• Adjacent building served as a hamam (bathhouse) made of brick and red sandstone.

Historical Significance:

• Aurangzeb’s imperial coronation took place here in 1658.
• The restored Sheesh Mahal stands as a testament to India’s rich Mughal heritage.
