SURAKSHA 75 JUNCTION

NEWS – The ‘Suraksha 75’ project, launched in 2023 by the former BBMP and now under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), aims to upgrade 75 major traffic junctions in Bengaluru to enhance road safety and streamline traffic. As per Tushar Giri Nath, Additional Chief Secretary, Urban Development Department (UDD), the entire project is expected to be completed by March 2026.

Progress So Far

  • Only one junction (Horamavu bridge) has been fully completed.
  • Work ongoing at 28 junctions, with 90–95% completion at key sites like:
    • Arekere, Sarakki, Kudlu Gate, KR Puram, Tin Factory, and Garebavipalya Temple.
  • Tenders floated for additional junctions.
  • 30 junctions prioritized using 2022–23 crash and fatality data from the Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP).

Challenges

  • Administrative delays: Project handover to GBA yet to be fully completed.
  • Ward-level hurdles and mobility constraints slowing execution.
  • Funding concerns: Expansion proposal for another 75 junctions pending approval.

Key Focus Areas

  • High-risk junctions: Byatarayanapura, Yeshwantpur, KR Market, Nayandahalli, Bagmane Tech Park.
  • BTP’s priority: Outer Ring Road (ORR) stretches — Iblur, Kadubeesanahalli, Marathahalli, Nagawara, Hebbal, and Hennur.
