NEWS – Union Home Ministry Approves Phase-2 of Urban Flood Risk Management Programme
HIGHLIGHTS
High-Level Approval for UFRMP Phase-2
- A high-level committee led by the Union Home Minister recently approved Phase-2 of the Urban Flood Risk Management Programme (UFRMP).
- The programme aims to support states in mitigating urban flood risks through a combination of structural and non-structural measures.
Cities Selected for Implementation
- 11 cities have been chosen for the programme based on population size, flood vulnerability, and other socio-environmental factors:
- Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Jaipur, Kanpur, Patna, Raipur, Trivandrum, Vishakhapatnam, Indore, and Lucknow.
Funding Pattern
- The programme will follow a cost-sharing model under National Disaster Management Fund (NDMF) guidelines.
- Centre: 90% funding
- States: 10% funding
Structural Measures
- Interlinking of water bodies for improved stormwater management.
- Construction of flood protection walls.
- Erosion control and soil stabilization using Nature-Based Solutions (NBS).
- Upgrading drainage infrastructure to enhance urban resilience.
Non-Structural Measures
- Implementation of Flood Early Warning Systems.
- Deployment of Data Acquisition Systems for real-time monitoring.
- Capacity building and awareness programs for local authorities and communities.
Objective and Impact
- The programme seeks to reduce urban flood risks, safeguard lives and property, and enhance the resilience of cities.
- By combining engineering solutions with technology-driven monitoring, UFRMP Phase-2 aims to strengthen disaster preparedness and promote sustainable urban development.
