SBI RESEARCH ON PER CAPITA INCOME OF STATES
NEWS – A report of Per Capita income of states was released by SBI recently
HIGHLIGHTS
- Regional Disparities in Per Capita Income Growth:
- Western and southern states such as Gujarat, Karnataka, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu have experienced significant growth in per capita income over the past decade.
- Gujarat’s per capita income increased from 1.4 times the national average in FY 2011-12 to 1.8 times in FY 2022-23.
- Karnataka and Telangana also saw notable increases, with their per capita incomes rising from 1.4 times to 1.7 times and 1.4 times to 1.6 times the national average, respectively.
- In contrast, states like West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Punjab have lagged behind in per capita income growth during the same period.
- Specific State Comparisons:
- Gujarat’s per capita income stands at Rs 2,09,188, which is 1.8 times the national average of Rs 1,16,216.
- In contrast, Bihar’s per capita income is only 0.3 times the national average, amounting to Rs 34,864.
- This stark difference highlights the wide disparity in economic development among Indian states.
- Long-Term Income Trends:
- In 2011-12, Gujarat, Karnataka, Telangana, and Himachal Pradesh had similar per capita incomes, roughly 1.4 times the national average.
- However, by 2022-23, Gujarat’s per capita income had surged to 1.8 times the national average, indicating a significant and sustained growth trajectory.
- National Per Capita GDP and Context:
- The latest data from the National Statistical Office (NSO) shows India’s per capita GDP at Rs 1,16,216 in 2022-23 (at 2011-12 constant prices).
- This national average provides a benchmark for understanding the relative wealth and economic performance of individual states.
