AI-BASED ADVANCED GROUNDWATER MONITORING SYSTEM

AI-BASED ADVANCED GROUNDWATER MONITORING SYSTEM

NEWS – The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has partnered with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Central Groundwater Authority (CGWA), and Karnataka Groundwater Authority (KGWA) to implement an AI-based advanced groundwater monitoring system

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Purpose: The collaboration aims to monitor groundwater levels across the city of Bangalore using cutting-edge technology.
  • Challenges Addressed:
    • Data Deficiency: BWSSB highlighted the challenge of insufficient data on groundwater levels, making it challenging to manage water resources effectively.
    • Borewell Failures: Failure of borewells contributes significantly to the water crisis, and traditional measurement methods are inadequate for accurate decision-making.
  • Technology Development:
    • AI and IoT System: Scientists from IISc are developing an AI and IoT system tailored for Bengaluru to monitor groundwater levels continuously and generate detailed reports.
    • Targeted Monitoring: The system enables officials to monitor specific areas closely, facilitating a targeted approach in addressing groundwater level fluctuations.
  • Task Force Establishment:
    • Purpose of Task Force: BWSSB plans to establish a groundwater task force at its head office comprising scientists from IISc and officials from BWSSB, CGWA, and KGWA.
    • Function: The task force will utilize AI-generated reports and data to monitor groundwater levels, analyze trends, and recommend measures to improve groundwater conditions periodically.
