GADDI DOG: RECOGNISED INDIGENOUS BREED

NEWS  – The Indian Council of Agricultural Research – National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBAGR) has officially recognised the Gaddi as an indigenous dog breed from the Himalayas.

ABOUT THE GADDI DOG

  • Origins and Name
    • Named after the Gaddi shepherds of Himachal Pradesh.
    • Traditionally used by shepherds to guard flocks of sheep and goats against predators.
  • Unique Traits
    • Renowned for its ability to fend off powerful predators, such as the Snow Leopard.
    • Nicknamed the ‘Indian Panther Hound’ or ‘Indian Leopard Hound’.
  • Geographical Distribution
    • Predominantly found in the Himalayan region.
  • Status Among Indigenous Breeds
    • The Gaddi is the fourth indigenous breed recognised after:
      1. Rajapalayam (Tamil Nadu)
      2. Chippiparai (Tamil Nadu)
      3. Mudhol Hound (Karnataka)

Appearance

  • Predominantly black with occasional white markings on feet, tail, or trunk.
  • Features a massive, arched neck, providing protection from predators.
  • Harmonious build: Medium stature, moderately long, with a robust and muscular body.

  • Ensures the maintenance of the breed’s purity.
