Why in news?Defence Minister visited Indira Point, the southernmost tip of the country and took stock of the defence preparedness and encouraged the troops to continue protecting the national interests in the region

About Indira Point

  • It is the southernmost point of India’s territory
  • Location : Village in the Nicobar district at Great Nicobar Island of Andaman and Nicobar Islands
  • Point was formerly known as Pygmalion Point and Parsons Point


  • Port Blair is connected to mainland India via air service.
  • Indira Point is along the Great Channel, popularly referred to as the ‘Six Degree Channel’, is a major shipping lane for international traffic
  • Galathea National Park and Lighthouse are the major attractions
  • Neighbouring Island : Rondo Island, Indonesia
