News: NADCP has reduced FMD and Brucellosis outbreaks through nationwide vaccination, surveillance and improved veterinary infrastructure.
About NADCP
- 100% Centrally Funded Central Sector Scheme launched in September 2019.
- Aim: Control Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Brucellosis in livestock.
- Target: FMD eradication by 2030.
- FMD vaccination: 100% livestock, twice annually.
- Brucellosis vaccination: Female bovine calves aged 4–8 months, once in lifetime.
- NADCP has been subsumed under the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP).
Key Achievements
- FMD outbreaks: 132 (2019) → 40 (2025).
- Brucellosis outbreaks: 22 (2019) → 15 (2025).
FMD
- Highly contagious viral disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals.
- Affects cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, pigs etc.
- Causes reduced milk yield, growth, fertility and working capacity.
- Major Indian serotypes: O, A and Asia-1.
Brucellosis
- Bacterial reproductive disease caused by Brucella abortus.
- Causes abortion, infertility and reduced milk/meat production.
- Endemic in India.
- No curative treatment for bovines; prevention through vaccination is crucial.
