Why in news?

the Karnataka government has advanced the date of ‘Sadbhavana Dina’ to August 18, 2022, while it was earlier observed on August 20 to coincide with former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s birth anniversary.

Highlights:

  • Sadbhavana Dina has been observed since 1992 on the theme of national integration and communal harmony.
  • On the day, students take oath to work for harmony in all universities, schools and colleges. Traditionally, a photo of Rajiv Gandhi is also kept before which they take the pledge.
  • Every year 20th August is celebrated as National Goodwill Day(Sadbhavana Dina) in India. On that day, programs are held to convey the importance of goodwill, harmony, peace and national unity to all.

Sadbhavana Diwas: Significance

  • Sadbhavana Diwas is celebrated in the memory of Rajiv Gandhi every year who dreamed to make India a developed country. His several economic and social works clearly show his dream.

Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award

  • In 1992, the Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana award was instituted by the All India Congress Committee of the Indian National Congress in memory of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Every year this award is given to those who have devoted their lives to understanding and promoting social harmony. This award constitutes a citation and cash Prize of Rs 10 Lakh.
