WAYANAD ROBUSTA COFFEE
WAYANAD ROBUSTA COFFEE
NEWS – Wayanad’s GI-tagged Robusta coffee became the first Kerala product to be included in the One District One Product (ODOP) programme under the Central government
HIGHLIGHTS
- The ODOP initiative aims to promote district-specific products through branding, processing, and marketing support.
- The product had received GI tag in 2007
Economic Impact
- Over 50,000 small and tribal farmers cultivate Robusta coffee in Wayanad, producing 60,000+ tonnes annually.
- The ODOP tag is expected to boost market access, attract investment, and strengthen initiatives like the Carbon Neutral Coffee Park and Climate Smart Coffee Project.
Government Support & Policy Linkage
- The ODOP scheme supports value chain development by focusing on agri-produce, including perishables, minor forest produce, and traditional products.
- Support is extended for capital investment, infrastructure, marketing, and branding—especially for ODOP-identified products.
Strategic Outlook
- With neighbouring states like Karnataka having established coffee industries, the ODOP tag offers Wayanad competitive leverage.
- It aligns with the cluster-based approach of the Agri Export Policy and Ministry of Agriculture’s development strategy.
