KARNATAKA TO LAUNCH JOINT LIABILITY GROUPS FOR GRUHA LAKSHMI BENEFICIARIES
NEWS – In a bid to boost the economic empowerment of women, the Karnataka government is set to form Joint Liability Groups (JLGs) for beneficiaries of the Gruha Lakshmi scheme
HIGHLIGHTS
Key Developments:
- Formation of 500 JLGs: Initially, 500 groups will be created, modeled after the successful Stree Shakti Groups, to facilitate collective economic initiatives and enhance credit access.
- Targeted Launch Date: The government plans to operationalize these groups by October 2, marking 50 years of the Anganwadi system in Karnataka.
- Empowerment through Collaboration: JLGs aim to promote financial inclusion, collective savings, micro-enterprise development, and mutual liability in loan repayment, strengthening women’s economic resilience.
- Gruha Lakshmi Scheme Overview: Currently, 1.22 crore women receive ₹2,000 per month under the Gruha Lakshmi scheme. The government has spent a total of ₹42,528 crore on this flagship initiative.
Analytical Insight:
- This move represents a strategic transition from direct cash transfers to community-based economic models, aiming at sustainable self-reliance.
- Linking welfare recipients to organized financial activity could amplify developmental outcomes, reduce dependency, and improve creditworthiness among rural women.
- The timing, aligned with the Anganwadi golden jubilee, signals the government’s focus on integrated social welfare reforms.
- Success will depend on effective implementation, capacity building, and access to markets and credit.
