GOAN FENI GETS GI TAG
GOAN FENI GETS GI TAG
CONTEXT
- Goan Feni is a traditional Indian spirit native to Goa, now recognized with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
- Feni has been a part of Goan heritage since the 1600s, rooted in Portuguese colonial influence.
- Portuguese missionaries introduced both cashew trees and distillation techniques to Goa.
- Traditionally crafted by ‘Bhatikars’, Feni was originally distilled in earthen pots (bhatis).
- It holds deep cultural importance, often consumed in local festivals and rituals.
CONCEPT: WHAT IS FENI & THE GI TAG?
- Feni is a clear, strong liquor made from cashew apples or coconut sap.
- Alcohol by volume (ABV) ranges between 40–43%, making it a potent spirit.
- Cashew Feni involves a four-step, non-industrial process:
- Harvesting ripe cashew apples.
- Juice extraction by traditional stomping.
- Natural fermentation in earthen pots (about 72 hours).
- Double distillation and condensation using clay or copper stills.
- The GI tag is a legal recognition that ties a product’s uniqueness to its geographical origin.
- This tag ensures intellectual property protection, boosts brand value, and supports local livelihoods.
CURRENT
- Goan Feni, also called Ozzo Feni, has officially received the GI tag in 2025, produced notably by Cazcar Distillery in Nanora, near Panaji.
- This recognition promotes authenticity, preserves traditional practices, and prevents imitation.
- GI status opens economic opportunities for local distillers and rural artisans.
- It can boost tourism, especially eco- and culinary tourism in Goa.
- The production does not require sophisticated machinery, making it labor-intensive but environmentally friendly.
- Feni’s GI status follows other Indian products like the Kumbakonam betel leaf, recently tagged for its unique regional traits.
