GOAN FENI GETS GI TAG

GOAN FENI GETS GI TAG

CONTEXT

  • Goan Feni is a traditional Indian spirit native to Goa, now recognized with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
  • Feni has been a part of Goan heritage since the 1600s, rooted in Portuguese colonial influence.
  • Portuguese missionaries introduced both cashew trees and distillation techniques to Goa.
  • Traditionally crafted by ‘Bhatikars’, Feni was originally distilled in earthen pots (bhatis).
  • It holds deep cultural importance, often consumed in local festivals and rituals.

CONCEPT: WHAT IS FENI & THE GI TAG?

  • Feni is a clear, strong liquor made from cashew apples or coconut sap.
  • Alcohol by volume (ABV) ranges between 40–43%, making it a potent spirit.
  • Cashew Feni involves a four-step, non-industrial process:
  1. Harvesting ripe cashew apples.
  2. Juice extraction by traditional stomping.
  3. Natural fermentation in earthen pots (about 72 hours).
  4. Double distillation and condensation using clay or copper stills.
  • The GI tag is a legal recognition that ties a product’s uniqueness to its geographical origin.
  • This tag ensures intellectual property protection, boosts brand value, and supports local livelihoods.

CURRENT

  • Goan Feni, also called Ozzo Feni, has officially received the GI tag in 2025, produced notably by Cazcar Distillery in Nanora, near Panaji.
  • This recognition promotes authenticity, preserves traditional practices, and prevents imitation.
  • GI status opens economic opportunities for local distillers and rural artisans.
  • It can boost tourism, especially eco- and culinary tourism in Goa.
  • The production does not require sophisticated machinery, making it labor-intensive but environmentally friendly.
  • Feni’s GI status follows other Indian products like the Kumbakonam betel leaf, recently tagged for its unique regional traits.
