GYANEX
NEWS – Before launching its first human spaceflight under the Gaganyaan programme, ISRO has been conducting simulation missions, known as Gaganyaan Analog Experiments (Gyanex). Selected astronauts spend several days in spacecraft-like conditions to prepare for the realities of space travel.
HIGHLIGHTS
Purpose of Gyanex Missions
- Acclimatization: Helps astronauts adjust to confined, space-like conditions.
- Protocol Development: Aids ISRO in developing procedures for communication, resource management, and other mission-critical processes.
- Scientific Experiments: Allows crew members to carry out experiments similar to those planned for space.
Key Features of the Simulation
- Conducted in a static mock-up simulator in Bangalore, modeled on the actual spacecraft.
- Participants experience all aspects of a space mission except microgravity, which is difficult to replicate on Earth.
- Crew members follow strict routines and have access only to resources available on space stations, including DRDO-developed food.
Gyanex-1: First Mission
- Conducted in July 2025.
- Crew: Group Captain Angad Pratap and two others.
- Duration: 10 days in confinement.
- Activities: Conducted 11 scientific experiments and followed mission protocols.
- Observations: Data collected on the effects of prolonged confinement, performance of crew, and other physiological and psychological parameters.
Future Plans
- Multiple Gyanex missions are planned to refine protocols and ensure astronaut preparedness.
- Insights from these simulations will guide ISRO in ensuring safety and efficiency for the first crewed Gaganyaan mission.
- Target launch: 2027.
