KARNATAKA’S EDUCATION PERFORMANCE IN CENTRE’S PGI 2.0 REPORT

  NEWS – Karnataka’s overall score dropped from 562 (2022-23) to 549 (2023-24) in the Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2.0 by the Ministry of Education.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The state continues to perform poorly in the ‘learning outcomes and quality’ domain – score remains stagnant at 59.4/240 for two consecutive years.
  • Despite government efforts, no visible improvement in core academic areas: language, mathematics, science, and social science in Classes 3, 5, and 8.
  • Karnataka received the Akanshi-1 grade (21%–30% performance bracket), along with 14 other states.
  • Experts cite vacancies in teaching posts as a key reason for poor learning outcomes.
  • Focus remains on infrastructure development through CSR funds, while quality of education is neglected.
  • Positive progress seen in the ‘access’ domain, with score improving from 63.8 to 67.7 out of 80.
  • PGI 2.0 is aligned with UDISE+, comprising 73 indicators and 1,000 total points across outcome and governance domains.
