NEWS – NITI Aayog, in collaboration with MoDoNER and UNDP, released the second edition of the North Eastern Region (NER) District SDG Index for 2023-24 on 7th July 2025
HIGHLIGHTS
- The index assesses 121 districts across the 8 North Eastern States using the SDG India Index methodology.
- 85% of the districts showed an increase in composite SDG scores compared to the previous edition (2021).
- Hnahthial, Mizoram emerged as the top-performing district with a score of 43.
- All districts of Mizoram, Sikkim, and Tripura achieved ‘Front Runner’ status (score: 65–99).
- Nagaland marked progress with 3 districts entering the Top 10 list.
- Sikkim demonstrated the most consistent performance across districts (narrowest score range: 5.5 points).
- 93 districts recorded higher scores under SDG 3: Good Health & Well-being.
- Assam’s districts showed improvement in Zero Hunger, Quality Education, Clean Water & Sanitation, and Decent Work & Economic Growth.
- The lowest-performing district was Longding (58.71) in Arunachal Pradesh.
- The index aims to facilitate data-driven governance, policy planning, and equitable resource allocation in the region.
- Leaders from NITI Aayog, MoDoNER, and UNDP India emphasized the importance of the index for inclusive development and achieving SDGs by 2030.
