Why in news? National Sports Day is celebrated on 29th August every year
- Born on 29 August 1905 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, Major Dhyan Chand started off his career with the British Indian Army.
- He was a member of the Indian Men’s Hockey teams which won three successive Olympic gold medals, in 1928, 1932 and 1936. In 1956, and honoured with the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third-highest civilian award.
- Dhyan chand represented India in 185 matches and scored over 400 goals during this period.
- Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the country’s highest sporting honour, is being renamed as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award
