Why in news? Government of India recently appointed new panel for Standing Committee on Statistics (SCoS)

Standing Committee on Statistics (SCoS)

  • Revamped in 2019
  • 16 members
  • Headed by – Pronab Sen (India’s first chief statistician)
  • Objective – Review the framework and results of all surveys conducted under the aegis of the National Statistical Office (NSO)
  • Role to be played by NSC: While the panel will help finalise survey results, the NSC will have the ultimate authority to approve the publication of those results
  • Need for review – National level data is a key resource for research, policymaking and development planning, and important to understand and analyse both claims in the light of existing evidence
