  • LM Singhvi committee recommended the celebrations and setting up of Pravasi Bharatiya Bhavan
  • First celebrated in 2003
  • Since the centenary year in 2015, the format was revised for the meeting to be held once every two years
  • Organized by Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India
  • Why January 9 – Commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to India
  • Significance of the celebrations :
    • Remember the favours and contributions made by Non-Resident Indians to the welfare and development of the nation
    • Provide an important platform to engage and connect with the overseas Indians and to enable the diaspora to interact with each other
  • Theme 2023 : “Diaspora: Reliable partners for India’s progress in Amrit Kaal”.
  • During 2023 celebrations
    • Commemorative Postal Stamp:Surakshit Jaayen, Prashikshit Jaayen” to underline the importance of safe, legal, orderly and skilled migration released
    • First-ever Digital PBD exhibition with theme : “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav – Contribution of Diaspora in Indian Freedom Struggle” held

Pravasi Bharatiya Samman

  • Highest honour conferred on a Non-Resident Indian, Person of Indian Origin; or an organisation or institution established and run by them
  • Award is to commemorate the contribution of the Indian diaspora to create a better understanding of India abroad, support India’s causes and work for the welfare of the local Indian community
